Tell the practice when booking that you intend to use CDBS. The visit should address both your child's dental needs and the practical questions about eligibility, available benefit, fees and consent.
What to have ready
- Your child's Medicare details and any identification the practice asks you to bring.
- A current medication and allergy list, plus relevant medical information.
- Details of recent dental care or X-rays at another practice.
- A short list of concerns, such as discomfort, a damaged tooth or difficulty with brushing.
- Information about communication, sensory or other support needs that may affect the visit.
Services Australia says you do not have to bring the CDBS eligibility letter; the dentist checks eligibility and the available benefit. Its guide to using CDBS also explains that you should discuss costs and coverage before agreeing to services.
What should be explained before treatment?
Ask what the first appointment will include and whether it is an assessment only. If treatment is recommended, ask the practitioner to explain the finding, options and timing in language you and your child can understand. The first visit does not mean every proposed procedure must happen that day.
- Which services are recommended, and why?
- Are they eligible CDBS items for my child?
- Is there enough benefit available?
- Will the services be bulk billed, or will there be a payment and claim?
- What am I consenting to, and what happens if the plan changes?
Prepare your child without promising an outcome
Ask the practice how best to describe the visit for your child's age and needs. Let the team know about previous difficult experiences. Avoid promising that nothing will feel uncomfortable or that treatment will definitely be completed; the clinician can explain the proposed care after assessment.
Our CDBS page for Canning Vale families is the main local reference. Bring your questions and ask for a written explanation of any follow-up care and costs. This checklist helps with preparation but does not replace the practice's instructions for your child's appointment.
Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
