CDBS and Western Australia's School Dental Service are different programs. One is a federal dental benefit for eligible children; the other is a state dental service with its own eligibility and enrolment arrangements. Being eligible for one should not be assumed to establish eligibility for the other.
CDBS: a benefit subject to program rules
CDBS eligibility depends on Medicare, age and relevant government-payment conditions. You use the benefit for covered services at a participating provider, subject to the program's limits. Services Australia explains who can get CDBS.
WA School Dental Service: a separate service pathway
WA Dental Health Services states that school children aged 5–16, or to the end of Year 11, attending a Department of Education recognised school are eligible for the School Dental Service. It notes that TAFE students are not eligible. Check enrolment, the appropriate clinic and the services available directly with the program.
Dentists @ Canning Vale is a private dental practice; this article does not present the clinic as a School Dental Service location. Our CDBS information page explains the separate private-practice appointment context.
Coordinate care if your child sees more than one provider
- Tell each provider about recent examinations, X-rays and treatment elsewhere.
- Ask whether records can be shared with your consent.
- Clarify which provider is managing an ongoing treatment plan.
- Check fees and claiming arrangements before each proposed service.
- Ask whom to contact for urgent concerns or care outside the program's scope.
Avoid arranging duplicate procedures simply because two pathways are available. Ask the treating practitioner to explain what is clinically needed and how recent records affect the plan.
If you are unsure which service to use, start by checking eligibility and availability with the relevant program, then discuss your child's needs. CDBS and the School Dental Service have different rules, so a general promise of free children's dentistry is not enough information to plan an appointment.
Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
