Understanding Compassionate Release of Super
Early access to superannuation may be available for certain necessary dental expenses in limited circumstances. It is not a routine payment option, and needing dental treatment does not automatically make you eligible.
Consider the long-term impact. Superannuation is intended for retirement. Approval is not guaranteed, and this page is general information, not personal financial, tax or legal advice.
Eligibility Is Assessed Individually
The ATO requires treatment to address a life-threatening illness or injury, acute or chronic pain, or acute or chronic mental illness. The treatment must also not be readily available through the public health system. Other eligibility conditions apply, including your ability to meet the expense by other means.
A particular procedure, such as an implant or crown, does not qualify automatically. Treatment chosen solely for cosmetic improvement is not a basis for approval. Read the ATO medical treatment criteria before making a decision.
Before You Apply
Understand Your Treatment
Ask about suitable alternatives, risks, expected costs and whether treatment can be staged. You can seek a second clinical opinion before deciding.
Consider Your Finances
Withdrawing super reduces retirement savings and potential future investment earnings. Tax may apply. Ask your fund and an appropriately qualified adviser about the effect on your circumstances.
Check Other Options
Discuss available payment options and check health fund or government program entitlements. Finance products have their own fees and eligibility requirements.
Evidence and the Application Process
- Check the current ATO eligibility rules and contact your super fund about its release requirements.
- Obtain an itemised quote or invoice, a staged dental treatment plan and the required practitioner reports. The ATO requires two reports, including one from a relevant registered specialist; consult its current guidance for the qualifications and evidence required for your case.
- Apply through the ATO using its official application process. Do not assume paid expenses or borrowed amounts qualify; specific rules apply.
- If approved, contact your fund to arrange release under its procedures. A dental assessment or supporting report is not an approval.
The Practice’s Role
At Dentists @ Canning Vale, ask your treating dentist about your clinical needs, treatment alternatives and a written estimate. Ask what records or documentation can be provided following assessment. We cannot determine ATO eligibility or guarantee release of your super.
Clinical recommendations should be based on your needs, not on how much super you have. You should not feel pressured to withdraw retirement savings or proceed with treatment.
Do I Need a Paid Application Service?
You can apply directly through the ATO. If considering a third-party service, check its fees, authority and privacy arrangements first. Never share your myGov password or security codes. A service provider cannot guarantee approval.
