CDBS can cover eligible fillings, dental X-rays and fissure sealants, along with other basic dental services. Coverage is not unlimited: the child must be eligible, the item must meet the program rules and sufficient benefit must remain.
Covered categories are not blanket approval
The program includes examinations, cleaning, X-rays, fissure sealing, fillings, root canal treatment and extractions. Orthodontic work, cosmetic dental work and services provided in hospital are excluded. The Australian Government's CDBS guide sets out the schedule and item restrictions.
The fact that an item category is listed does not mean a child needs it at every visit. Your dental practitioner should explain why an investigation or treatment is recommended and whether it meets the relevant requirements.
Questions about the proposed items
- What is the reason for the filling, X-ray or sealant?
- Which CDBS item number will be used?
- Are there age, tooth, frequency or other item restrictions?
- Has a previous service affected whether this item can be claimed?
- How much benefit remains after the proposed care?
- Will there be any amount to pay, and how will it be billed?
Understand the treatment as well as the benefit
A funding decision and a clinical decision are not the same. Ask the dentist to show the problem, explain reasonable alternatives and discuss the consequences of monitoring or delaying a recommended procedure. For background, our fissure sealant information explains that treatment category.
Our CDBS page for Canning Vale families is the place to start when arranging an appointment. Tell the practice if your child has recently received care elsewhere so records and benefit use can be considered.
Before signing consent, make sure you understand the proposed services and fees. If the plan changes during the visit, ask how that affects both the clinical recommendation and the available benefit rather than assuming the original estimate still covers everything.
Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
