How Long Does Composite Bonding Last? Care, Repairs and Replacement

There is no single lifespan that can be promised for composite bonding. The size and location of the restoration, the bite, oral health and what happens to the tooth over time all matter. A quoted average is not an expiry date or a warranty.

Repair does not always mean complete replacement

Composite can sometimes be added to or repaired when damaged. It may also chip, discolour or need further maintenance. Bristol Dental School's composite build-up information explains these issues in the context of worn teeth; its figures should not be treated as a prediction for every type of cosmetic bonding.

If a restoration looks stained or has a damaged edge, ask the dentist to assess the cause before choosing polishing, a local repair or replacement. A colour change alone cannot establish which approach is appropriate.

Questions at a review

  • Is this surface staining, a change in the material, or a problem at the edge?
  • Is the underlying tooth healthy?
  • Could a limited repair preserve the existing restoration?
  • Is the bite or grinding contributing to repeated damage?
  • What are the disadvantages of repair compared with replacement?
  • What would each option cost, and what follow-up is included?

Build maintenance into the original decision

Ask for personalised cleaning advice and a review schedule. Mention habits such as clenching or biting hard objects. If a protective appliance is recommended, clarify its purpose and fit; it should not be assumed to eliminate the possibility of damage.

Our tooth bonding information outlines the treatment, while the bruxism management page covers related grinding concerns. Keep the original treatment records and ask whom to contact if the restoration breaks.

Seek a dental review for a new sharp edge, persistent sensitivity, pain or a change in your bite. Do not try to polish, reshape or repair the bonding at home. The most useful expectation is ongoing care and assessment when something changes—not a guaranteed number of years.

Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
