Can Tooth Bonding Repair a Chipped Front Tooth?

Illustration of a front-tooth model with a chipped corner beside a dental mirror.

Composite bonding may repair some chipped front teeth, but the visible chip is only part of the assessment. A dentist needs to check the tooth, the cause of the break and whether a simple surface repair is appropriate.

A small chip still needs the right assessment

The Canadian Dental Association's bonding guide describes resin repairs for chips. Bonding is not a universal answer to fractures, and a tooth injured in an accident may need assessment beyond its appearance.

Tell the practice when it happened, whether there was an impact, and whether the tooth feels loose, painful or different when you bite. Ask how soon you should be seen. Do not attempt to file the edge or glue material onto the tooth yourself.

What to ask about a proposed repair

  • Is only the outer tooth affected, or is there evidence of deeper injury?
  • Is bonding suitable, and what alternatives are reasonable?
  • Will any existing restoration or tooth surface need preparation?
  • How will the bite and shape be checked?
  • Are later reviews needed after this injury?
  • What should I do if the repair chips or the tooth develops symptoms?

A repair may restore an edge without replacing the whole tooth surface, but the size and position of the defect matter. Ask your dentist to explain the limits of the proposed result and the possibility of future repair.

Plan ongoing care

Our tooth bonding page provides general treatment information. If the chip is linked to grinding, discuss whether further assessment is needed rather than assuming a repair alone addresses the cause. For sports injuries, ask about appropriate protection before returning to the activity.

Contact the practice through our emergency dental care information if you need advice about a recent injury. The appointment and urgency should be based on symptoms and the circumstances, not solely on how small the chip looks.

Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
