Composite Bonding or Clear Aligners for Gaps Between Teeth?

Illustration of a clear dental tray in a case beside a tooth model.

Bonding changes tooth shape by adding material; clear aligners move teeth. Both may be discussed for a gap, but they do different jobs. The cause of the space, the proportions of the teeth and the bite need assessment before choosing an approach.

Adding material is not the same as moving a tooth

Composite resin can be used to alter a tooth's outline, including some small gaps, as described by the Canadian Dental Association. It does not move the roots or correct every positional problem.

Clear aligners are removable appliances used for planned tooth movement. The British Orthodontic Society's appliance guide explains their role. Orthodontic assessment is needed to determine whether aligners, another appliance or no movement is appropriate.

What should be assessed?

  • Why is the gap present, and has it changed recently?
  • Would adding material make the teeth disproportionately wide?
  • Are tooth position or the bite contributing to the problem?
  • Is the gum health suitable for the proposed care?
  • Would a combined plan be considered, and in what sequence?
  • What maintenance, repair or retention would be needed afterwards?

A new or widening space deserves assessment rather than being treated solely as an appearance issue. A photograph cannot show all the relevant factors.

Compare the full commitment

For bonding, ask about preparation and the future care of the added material. For aligners, ask about wear instructions, monitoring, limitations and the retainer plan. Compare written costs and appointments, not only the initial procedure.

Our tooth bonding information is a useful starting point for discussing a small shape change. You do not need to choose treatment before the assessment, and leaving a healthy, stable gap unchanged may be a reasonable option to discuss.
