Do I Need a Restorative Dentist or a Prosthodontist?

A general dentist can assess many damaged or missing teeth and discuss restorative treatment. Some more complex problems may need a prosthodontist or another registered dental specialist. The useful first question is not which title sounds more advanced, but what your particular problem needs.

What do the names mean?

Restorative dentistry describes care that repairs or replaces teeth. It is not, by itself, proof that a practitioner holds specialist registration. In Australia, prosthodontics is a recognised dental specialty. You can check a dentist's registration and any registered specialty in Ahpra's practitioner register.

Our restorative dentistry page explains the kinds of treatment that may be discussed at Dentists @ Canning Vale. This article does not describe the clinic or its dentists as registered specialists.

When should you ask about referral?

Ask whether specialist input would be useful if several teeth need coordinated treatment, a previous restoration has repeatedly failed, or you have received substantially different treatment plans. Referral is a question to discuss after examination, not something a search term can decide.

  • What is the diagnosis, and which teeth are affected?
  • What can be managed here, and what would a specialist assess?
  • Would a referral be for an opinion, treatment, or both?
  • Who will coordinate the plan and provide maintenance afterwards?

Prepare for the first assessment

Bring a medication list, relevant dental records and any previous written plans. Describe the practical problem: difficulty chewing, a loose restoration, pain, or a tooth you are concerned about. You do not need to arrive having chosen a crown, bridge or implant.

Request a written explanation of alternatives, including whether monitoring or a smaller intervention is reasonable. Ask for separate assessment and treatment fees, likely stages, risks and follow-up responsibilities. If you have extras cover, obtain item numbers and ask your fund about benefits before committing; a referral does not itself guarantee a rebate.

You can also read about crowns and bridges before discussing options. The aim is an understandable plan suited to your needs, with referral where appropriate—not choosing care solely from a professional-sounding label.

Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
