Medibank states that dental implants are major dental procedures and that benefits may be payable under selected Extras covers. That is not a promise that every Medibank policy covers implants or pays for the full course of treatment. Check your specific product and proposed item numbers before committing to costs.
The starting point is Medibank’s dental implant cover information. For appointments and claiming at our practice, see our Medibank dental information in Canning Vale.
Ask what is included in the implant plan
The word ‘implant’ can be used in conversation to describe an entire replacement tooth, while the written plan may separate the implant and the restoration it supports. Ask the dentist to explain those parts before seeking an insurance estimate.
Implant care commonly involves assessment, imaging, placement and a later restoration, with the sequence depending on the individual plan. Healthdirect explains that preparation and fitting require more than one appointment. Its dental implant procedure guide also outlines suitability considerations, complications and alternatives.
Ask which quoted fees relate to the planned stages, whether anything is provisional, and what further assessment could change the estimate. Do not assume that a price or benefit described for one component includes the complete treatment.
Questions to take to Medibank
- Does my current product pay benefits for these exact implant and restoration items?
- What amount is estimated for each item, and are there shared limits or other restrictions?
- Have I served the waiting periods relevant to the proposed services?
- Does previous treatment or a previous claim affect these benefits?
- If treatment takes place in stages, what information do you need about the expected dates?
- Which parts of the estimate would remain payable by me?
Provide the written plan and the treating provider details when asking these questions. If you are given a total estimated benefit, request the item-by-item breakdown as well. That makes it easier to identify an excluded component or an assumption that needs correcting.
Confirm any separate provider or facility charges
Ask whether the proposal involves another clinician or a separate facility. If it does, request those estimates too and ask Medibank to assess the relevant charges separately. Do not assume that an Extras benefit estimate answers every question about a plan involving hospital care.
The Commonwealth Ombudsman’s dental and oral surgery guidance explains the importance of distinguishing dental fees from hospital-related costs.
Suitability comes before benefit availability
An insurance contribution does not establish that an implant is the appropriate option. Your dentist needs to assess your oral health and relevant medical history and discuss benefits, risks, alternatives and ongoing care. Implants can have complications, including infection, and are not suitable for everyone.
Our dental implants page provides an overview for patients considering an assessment. Ask which alternatives are reasonable in your circumstances and how their care requirements and total costs compare.
Use an estimate without treating it as a guarantee
Before proceeding, make sure you understand the proposed treatment fee and the estimated insurance contribution as separate amounts. If the plan changes, ask whether the benefit estimate needs to be checked again. Treatment timing should be discussed with the dentist rather than adjusted solely to pursue an insurance benefit.
This is general treatment and insurance information, not a personal recommendation or confirmation of cover. Medibank determines individual benefits, and a dental assessment is required to discuss suitability.
