How to Check Your Medibank Dental Rebate Before Treatment

To check your Medibank dental rebate, get an itemised treatment estimate from your dentist, including item numbers, fees, provider details and expected treatment dates. Use those details to request a benefit estimate from Medibank, then compare it with the quoted fees to understand your estimated out-of-pocket cost.

Patients considering care at Dentists @ Canning Vale can find our appointment and HICAPS information on the main Medibank page. The steps below help you prepare for the separate conversation with your health fund.

Get the treatment details first

Ask for an itemised treatment estimate showing the proposed services and their charges. Include the treating dentist’s provider details and the expected treatment dates. Medibank specifically requests this information when calculating dental benefits; see its dental services guide.

If a plan contains several appointments, keep the stages clearly separated. Ask which services are included now, which are possible later steps, and which have not yet been recommended. This helps avoid asking the insurer to estimate treatment that has not been agreed.

Request a benefit estimate

Medibank’s guide to managing dental costs recommends obtaining item numbers and charges before treatment. Its My Medibank app includes an out-of-pocket estimator. If you cannot find the relevant item or the result is unclear, contact Medibank with the written estimate.

Ask for the response against each proposed item, not just a total. Save the response or reference number with the estimate so you can refer to the same information if you have a follow-up question.

Ask what could affect the estimate

  • Is this item included in my current product, and have I served the applicable waiting period?
  • How much is estimated for this item, and which limit does it use?
  • Are there restrictions related to previous claims, replacement items or the proposed course of treatment?
  • Does the treating provider or anticipated date affect the estimate?
  • What should I recheck if the treatment plan changes?

An available annual limit is not a promise that the whole balance will be paid towards one procedure. Medibank explains that item benefits and restrictions can still leave a gap. Check its dental limits and restrictions guidance alongside your own cover summary.

Work out the remaining amount

Compare each quoted fee with the corresponding estimated benefit, then ask for clarification wherever the figures do not match your understanding. Keep the total treatment fee, estimated insurance payment and estimated amount payable by you as separate figures.

Do not treat a benefit estimate as a fixed treatment quotation or a guarantee of claim payment. If the recommended items, fees, treatment dates or membership circumstances change, obtain an updated estimate before relying on the earlier figure.

Understand what HICAPS does

HICAPS is a way to process eligible claims at the practice; it does not create an entitlement that your policy excludes. Bring a valid physical or accepted digital member card. Medibank’s provider claiming guidance also explains terminal quoting and card requirements.

For treatment such as dental fillings or crowns and bridges, ask your dentist to explain the proposed care and alternatives as well as the fee. Understanding the benefit is one part of making an informed treatment decision.

This is general claiming information. Your final entitlement is determined by Medibank under your policy and the services actually provided.

Clinical Note: Any surgical or invasive dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified dental practitioner. The information on this website is for general educational purposes only.
